European Heritage sites are milestones in the creation of today’s Europe. Spanning from the dawn of civilization to the Europe we see today, these sites celebrate and symbolize European ideals, values, history and integration.

On December 5, 2017, the European Commission announced that an independent jury had nominated “Leipzig Musical Heritage Sites” for the European Heritage Label. In March and June of 2018, the Heritage Label was officially awarded.

“Leipzigs Musikerbe-Stätten – Leipzig’s Musical Heritage Sites” include the St. Thomas and St. Nicholas Church, the St. Nicholas School, the Bach Archive, the Mendelssohn-Haus, the University of Music and Theatre »Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy«, the Schumann-Haus, the C.F. Peters music publishing company building with the Grieg museum, as well as the Gewandhaus.

Through the “Leipziger Notenspur” the most important living and working sites of famous Leipzig composers are documented and connected to one another through a visually highlighted guide system through the city center. The Music Trail is 5.1 km long and can be completed on foot.

In view of the anniversary years 2006 (150^thdeath-day) and 2010 (200^thbirthday), the Schumann Network was founded in the Fall of 2005. Headed by Bonn, several institutions connected with Robert Schumann, from the Schumann-cities of Zwickau, Leipzig, Düsseldorf, and Bonn teamed up – after the initiative was taken by the Federal Republic’s commissioner for culture and media – with the goal of giving their reverence to this great German composer (1810, Zwickau – 1856, Bonn) and to help increase and maximize public awareness by bringing together their activities. In this spirit, several other Schumann-cities have since been included, helping fulfill the goal to provide the most “comprehensive coverage” possible of Robert Schumann.

The consortium for Music Museums in Germany (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Musikermuseen Deutschlands) came into existence in November 2005 and boasts over 40 museum members from the entire German Federal Republic. The consortium sees itself as a platform which provides music museums with opportunities for content-related exchange as well as for cooperation in the areas of marketing and publicity. The museums aim to achieve meaningful, intensive media relations, in order to bring Germany back into the conversation as a nationally and internationally significant site for museums and for music.
